We want to belong. We want to belong with all our friends and our community.

Our friends are having a drink, and we wanna belong so we take the drink, even though we know that we’re gonna struggle to wake up in the morning. Or we eat the sugary treat because someone made it for us, but it’s gonna give us a headache an hour later.

How can you participate in treats and feel the group celebration without diminishing your connection to yourself?

This is the discussion we have on the podcast today as I continue my discussion with Dawn Larson (a therapist) and Amy (a 12-Step participant).

How do you feel like you belong?

As I talk with clients about what makes them feel whole, rested, full-capacity, and vibrant, we often talk about food, exercise, and sleep.

Inevitably the conversation morphs into a confessional of all the ways they ate things they knew were bad for them, or stayed up late watching a movie even though they knew that would make the morning tough. They didn’t want to miss out on the party!

How do you decide how to take care of yourself?

It’s so idiosyncratic! Every single person in my office needs a different set of habits to help their life run smoothly.

My hope with this discussion is that you will hear your story in the itty bitty—and certainly idiosyncratic—details of my guests.

We dive deep into tiny patterns. So, buckle in.

We’re asking the question: How do I belong to the Big Wide World of my friends and my sweetheart without losing touch with belonging to myself?

How do we navigate GROUP-TREAT situations and stay mindful of what kinds of treats actually treat my body and wellness the best?

I love this discussion because it’s about noticing how many different ways you can belong to a group without sacrificing belonging to yourself.
