Have you ever considered how a simple “thank you” could transform your relationship?

I’ve been watching people’s relationships since my parents divorced when I was five years old. During those decades of observation, I’ve observed a handful of habits that work over and over. Today’s episode focuses on one of those habits. It’s all about the magic of thank you.

I’m bringing this episode back from the archives because it’s a habit that makes a difference every single time. With my private clients, when we focus on this habit of “thank you” for the month, their relationship always has a breakthrough.

Do you want to try the thank you experiment?

I know that a lot of my clients have resistance to this habit. I’m not always sure exactly where the resistance comes from, but I know that “thank you” can feel like a vulnerable thing to say. You might feel like you’re in Kindergarten when the teacher tells you what to say. You feel pressure that you’re supposed to do it and then it somehow doesn’t feel genuine.

But like any learned skill, when we first practice riding a bike, we’re fumbling around and falling down. But how are you gonna get good at riding a bike if you don’t fall down a few times? If you don’t learn how to balance? Saying thank you is a new way of bringing balance to your relationship.

But balancing might also make you feel a little wobbly. So don’t be surprised if you feel a little off-kilter at times. Let yourself stumble and fall and get off balance. Because eventually the tenderness that will be born in your relationship from cultivating thank you is going to blow you away.
