Everyone parents according to different values. What values influence the choice to be a stay-at-home mom?

Of course you get bored playing with kids. How many times are you supposed to find it fascinating to make the dinosaur leap on the tower to knock it down? Stay-at-home parenting doesn’t mean play-at-home parenting.

My guest today, Faye Tidd, was an elementary school teacher for 12 years before she made the decision to become a stay-at-home mom. She believes that children who have lots of unstructured play become better problem solvers.

She chose the stay-at-home mom lifestyle to offer her children an antidote to hustle culture. Yes, she sacrificed a lot to make this choice. But what she’s gained is freedom.

The gift of being a stay-at-home mom

Faye comes to parenting with a teacher’s heart and a teacher’s experience. She has seen kids who come from homes where the child wasn’t given the room or the time to simply sit. Quiet. For as long as they need.

So, when she became a mother, one of the things that mattered most to her was to give her children the opportunity to live at their own pace. Her role as a stay-at-home mom has allowed her to provide them–and herself–with this gift.

She wants to create a slow home where children have time to embody the deep, rich flavors that want to emerge naturally from them. Children have their own timeline. She has made the choice to give up some financial flexibility so that she can invest in her children’s desire to play without interruption. How rich is that?

3 Mom’s find their motherhood heart

I remember when I was a young mom and a casual comment in the grocery store empowered me like nothing else. I was struggling with my toddler in the cereal aisle and, as every parent knows, this is embarrassing.

The woman next to me who was grabbing a box of Cheerios smiled at me and kindly said, “We’ve all been there. Trust your motherhood heart.”

This interview is the first in a 3-part series where I’m talking to 3 moms who’ve chosen different approaches to parenting. As we take this journey together, listening to 3 different moms discuss 3 different choices when it comes to raising their kids, my wish for you is that you’ll be inspired by how they each listen and trust their own motherhood heart, and parent according to their own values.
