What happens when love includes more than you bargained for?

My son (who you already heard from in episode #50) fell in love with a woman who already had a son. He had hesitations early in the relationship because falling in love with his then-girlfriend meant being part of an instant family.

Did he want that?

“Baggage” is not a burden

We all carry a bunch of suitcases with us on this journey of life. One person carries a suitcase that reads “I come with a ready-made-family.” Another person carries a suitcase filled with nightmares from an alcoholic father.

Most people call these suitcases baggage and view them as a burden.

But what if you changed the narrative? What if that suitcase filled with experiences helped to make your partner who they are?

Certainly, that’s what my son, Logan, realized when it occurred to him that his girlfriend’s kid wasn’t baggage. That extra suitcase was instead filled with assurances of the loving mother he could already she that she was.

Try this:

Unpack one of the suitcases in your sweetheart’s life and notice how that thing that may feel like a burden is actually what created the exact person you love in your partner.

How about you?

I’d love to hear about baggage gets unpacked at your house and how you’re finding a new suitcase that is filled with treasures that make up your partner.
