Use a water date to bring calm to your relationship

I just returned from an exciting adventure hiking The Alps with my husband. On the final day of our vacation we were in a little town with a lake and I asked my husband if he would rent one of those very touristy boats with me and float around.

We didn’t say much. We just listened to the sounds of the occasional fish jump, or watched the wake made by a duck paddling nearby. I felt a calm blanket the two of us.

The cool thing about water is how it seeks always to be level. When you immerse yourself in a body of water, somehow, magically, a similar thing happens inside of you as well.

This leveling seeps into your relationship and you feel the companionship of floating. As the water seeks its own level, so, too will your connection.

How does this change your relationship? What would even out between you and your sweetheart if you gave your relationship over to the even flow of a body of water?

How water invigorates your relationship

My husband and I had the amazing good fortune to raft our way down the Grand Canyon. We were looking forward to this trip because it was the first time we’d been away from our children and we’d just spent 10 years navigating David’s schooling, the death of 3 of my relatives, and 3 moves.

We’d been surviving. Now this enormous river was going to reset our relationship.

Listen to the episode or read the blog to find out how a broken oar and laughter in the calm environment of the river helped my relationship heal from the stress of dealing with crisis after crisis together.

Try this:

Find a body of water and put yourselves in, on, or beside this water.

Then notice what you need from the water.

What do you need from water?

Do you simply need that floating time to synthesize your life? Floating on the water (or wading, or sitting beside the water) helps to bond you to your sweetheart.

It builds the trust that your Friendship Role needs to thrive. You’ll feel more companionable. Things that need to bubble up, will. Then, because you’re floating, you can more easily flow with those conversations.

Maybe you notice that it’s your Partnership Role that wants some attention. You feel overwhelmed, like you’re the one doing all the work.

If that’s how you’re feeling, I recommend you rent or borrow a paddle board and get on it together. Notice what it takes to paddle together and let yourselves laugh at the imbalance.

Laughter is medicine to the Lover Role in your relationship. It ignites your chemistry. The more you wake up that Lover Role, the more lubricated all your Partnership tangles will be.

Date Night Discussion

This week instead of talking, allow the water to offer you the silence of being together. Allow yourselves to NOT talk and notice how much you say to one another by sharing an experience of silence.
